The Love Boards

Recently someone asked our fearless leader John Logic about the Burton Love Boards, and what his thoughts were on the growing media frenzy over the Burton Boards:

yes, the LOVE boards. it’s in the news, these boards from Burton, and a lot of people think it’s worth talking about (i’m not one of them) but since so many have approached me for comment, i decided to just put my thoughts on our blog and direct them here.

you know, i’m a big proponent of LOVE, in all its forms. mostly in the declaration of love, from one friend to another. this doesn’t happen enough, i think. maybe because people are not aware of the love they have for one another. it’s like - “yeah, we’re friends, been friends for years, always stop by his house for a beer when i’m in the neighborhood and i see his car in the driveway” or ” yeah, me and him been snowboarding together ’bout six years now. we split the gas except for that one year when he wasn’t working but it was all good, cuz he’s my bro’, you know?” - what i’m saying is that we have these relationships that we develop and maintain and even ‘nurture’ but we don’t necessarily think of it this way, and consequently we don’t see it as love. but i think it is. and when people realize that, and learn to accept it, we’ll see a shift in the way we relate to one another. if we can get past LIMITING the word love to the person we’re dating/married/related to and Expand it to the people we interact with on a daily/yearly level, then we might not have marketing gimmicks that hijack the word Love and slap it on a image of a woman to sell a toy.

does the graphic bother me?

no.

is it exploitative of women?

no more than watching tv after 9pm or any other 1/2-assed marketing effort played out thousands of times a day across this country.

this country:

would this happen in Europe? i think we know the answer to that. topless beaches are the norm, and no one has to apologize for the shape of their breasts.

these boards show no bush, no nipples. what’s wrong with them is that they play on the simple tired ethic that was so prevalent in the 60’s-70’s. (do we really want to raise our kids with the same values as our dads?) make boards with Awesome nude photos of women AND men without the airbrushing and lingerie. make boards with classic paintings of naked bodies by the Masters.
let people protest that, and see if anyone cares.

thank you for writing!

i hope things are well for you. stay optimistic for the Election!

love, John
